About Jana Zavala
I started in roofing by working at a local roofing distributor in 1996. I was often challenged by the contractors coming in and wanting to talk to a ‘man’ as the perception was that women weren’t knowledgeable in such a male dominated field. This spurred my thirst for knowledge. Everything from installing taper sawn shakes to the ASTM testing on shingles for high wind areas.
By 2003, I was working for a major roofing manufacturer, GAF, as a territory manager in Oregon. I was later promoted to a regional manager covering 13 states in the west and Canada. My manufacturing experience continued when I went to work for Malarkey as a national trainer. This led to a more comprehensive knowledge on polymer modified products.
By late 2018, I felt ready to take the next step into contracting. I took my Oregon Contractors test in early 2019 and only missed one question.
In March of 2019, I founded HER Roofing Co.
Today, we have installed hundreds of roofs in the Portland metro area and I’m always looking for new challenges in the types of roofs we do.

I manage and direct the company’s growth with a concentration on company culture. I love building and ‘helping-to-build’ the company culture. With company culture, it’s a team effort and everyone has a part. Also, I still do some roof estimating on the more complicated roofing systems.

In Her Free Time
I love to run and garden in my free time. If time allows, I also love to travel the world and I always find myself looking at roofs. One of these days, I’ll climb a ladder in a foreign country.

I believe in a ‘never stop learning’ approach to business and installation techniques. After all, how do you know ‘what you don’t know’? It’s important for my team and I to be knowledgeable in the field we are in and to be on the forefront of changing technologies and installation methods.
